ICYMI: Pratt Industries to expand in Albany

Press Release courtesy of the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission

Albany, Ga. – The Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission today announced the expansion of Pratt Industries, resulting in more than $18 million in capital investment and the creation of 30 new jobs.

Pratt Industries is the country’s 5th largest corrugated packaging company, and has maintained a converting plant for corrugated boxes in Albany since 1983.

Albany’s sheet converting plant is one of Pratt’s more than 40 facilities throughout the United States and Mexico – the world’s largest converting network – tasked with converting corrugated paper board into finished boxes.

“Pratt is a key contributor in the global logistics industry, as one of the world’s largest producers of recycled containerboard. Their continued investment in our community reaffirms Albany-Dougherty County as an ideal location for manufacturing and logistics industries, and we are proud to have Pratt as a corporate citizen here in our community,” said ADEDC President and CEO Jana Dyke.

The expansion comes as a result of an increase in global shipping and logistics needs, and will include an addition of over 100,000 square feet to Pratt’s existing facility. Upgrades will include new machinery, new scrap recycling system, waste water system and additional warehouse space.

“We have been proud to call Albany home for the last 38 years and are excited to be continuing and strengthening our relationship with the local community,” said Pratt Industries Albany Plant Manager Drew Pennington.

Pratt’s expansion is expected to be complete by January 2022. See here for career opportunities.

ICYMI: Phoebe joins forces with ABAC to put more nurses to work

Albany, Ga. – A partnership between Phoebe and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) will increase the number of nursing students at ABAC and help address the growing nursing shortage in southwest Georgia.  “We would like to hire 250 nurses today to alleviate our reliance on contract labor, but a labor pool that large does not exist in our area.  Across the country, the number of nursing school graduates simply isn’t keeping up the number of nurses hospitals need, and we are eager to work closely with educational partners in our region to help them increase enrollment and help us develop a larger group of potential new members of the Phoebe Family,” said Evelyn Olenick, DNP, RN, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital Chief Nursing Officer.

Under a new agreement recently signed by Phoebe and ABAC, Phoebe will fund a new nursing faculty position at the college and provide ABAC nursing students access to clinical rotations at Phoebe facilities and training opportunities at the Phoebe Simulation and Innovation Center.  For its part, ABAC agreed to fund an additional nursing faculty position, admit an additional 40 nursing students and take steps to recruit more nursing students who live within 100 miles of its campuses in Tifton and Bainbridge.

“It truly takes a collaborative approach to come up with solutions to combat the nursing shortage.  We are proud to open our doors to ABAC students and are excited about this partnership as we work together to increase the number of registered nurses entering the workforce in southwest Georgia,” said Tracy Suber, EdD, MSN, Phoebe Assistant Vice President of Simulation Center and Nursing Education.

On a recent tour of Phoebe’s simulation center, ABAC President Dr. David Bridges touted the high-tech center’s importance as a recruitment tool that could attract more young nurses to Phoebe.  “Having students here and having them go through this sim center is a huge value to Phoebe,” Dr. Bridges said.

Dr. Bridges said the reputation of any nursing program is based on how well it prepares students to go to work as soon as they graduate, its academic quality and the relationship educators build with clinical providers.  “This agreement addresses all three,” Dr. Bridges said.  “It adds a much-enhanced dimension of hands-on learning, so the students learn to do it, not just learn about it.  It will increase the board exam passage rate of our graduates, and it will build a strong relationship between our two organizations.”

The agreement will be in place for the next two years, with the option to extend the partnership if both Phoebe and ABAC are pleased with the results.

ICYMI: Phoebe starts COVID-19 vaccinations

File Photo

Press Release courtesy of Phoebe Putney Health System

Albany, Ga. – Phoebe administered its first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to frontline healthcare workers Thursday afternoon, just hours after the shipments arrived at two of its hospitals.  “This is an exciting day, and one we have been looking forward to for quite a while.  We hope this milestone represents the beginning of the end of our COVID-19 fight, but we know that fight is far from over as infections and hospitalizations are surging in our area right now,” said Scott Steiner, Phoebe Putney Health System President & CEO.

Phoebe received around 5,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine Thursday morning at its main campus and around 1,000 doses a few hours later at Phoebe Worth.  Vaccinations began at both campuses Thursday afternoon.  Phoebe Sumter has ordered vaccines and is waiting to find out when they will be delivered.  Phoebe invested in ultra-cold freezer systems at all three hospitals to properly and safely store the vaccines.

Phoebe is providing vaccines in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.  The Phoebe Vaccine Planning Team and the Community COVID-19 Vaccine Medical Task Force helped to develop a tiered approach to Phase 1 of the CDC’s plan.  “Tier 1 includes healthcare workers at highest risk of COVID-1 exposure.  We’re focusing on them right now, but we will move on to tiers two, three and four as quickly as possible.  We will work hard to provide a vaccination to every healthcare worker in our community who falls into the first phase of the CDC vaccination plan and who requests a vaccine.  We have set up a registration process and we are reaching out to the Phoebe Family, independent providers and first responders as their appropriate tier opens up,” said Dianna Grant, MD, Phoebe Putney Health System Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. James Black, Phoebe Medical Director of Emergency Services was the first to receive his vaccination.  “The science shows this vaccine is safe and effective, and I have full confidence that it will offer outstanding protection against the virus,” Dr. Black said.  “Our team in the ER has worked incredibly hard throughout this entire pandemic, and now they’re facing another dangerous surge.  For their sake, I’m glad the vaccine is here, and I’m proud to set an example and do my part by being the first person in our area to roll up my sleeve and get this shot.”

Phoebe set up six vaccination stations in the solarium adjacent to its main cafeteria with a goal of administering at least 100 vaccines Thursday afternoon.  After Dr. Black received his shot, a steady stream of employees from Tier 1 departments filed through.  Phoebe has already made plans to expand its vaccination capacity on Friday.  “We will ensure this process is safe and equitable, but we also want to make sure it is efficient.  We want to vaccinate as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, and we are already working to request more doses to ensure people in southwest Georgia can get vaccinated when we are approved to move on to the next phase,” Steiner said.

Even though vaccines have arrived, it will take months to provide immunity to most of the population, so everyone should continue to wear masks, wash their hands often and avoid close contact with others.  Phoebe will continue to share vaccine updates with the public, and, as the vaccination process moves forward and opens to broader groups within the community, Phoebe will share details of where and when those outside of healthcare can be vaccinated.

ICYMI: Latest Coronavirus Update from Phoebe

Press Release courtesy of Phoebe Putney Health System

Albany, Ga. –Phoebe is taking additional steps to try to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  As of Friday afternoon, all Phoebe employees and all physicians are required to submit to temperature screenings when they arrive at work.  “We want to do all we can to protect our patients, contain this illness and minimize its spread throughout our communities.  To ensure no Phoebe team members who may have coronavirus symptoms are at work, we are checking them daily before their shifts,” said Scott Steiner, Chief Executive Officer, Phoebe Putney Health System.

At all Phoebe hospitals, team members are being funneled through limited entrances where their temperatures are quickly taken.  Per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, anyone with a fever will immediately be referred for appropriate medical screening.  At other Phoebe facilities, all employees will submit to temperature screenings when they arrive in their departments before they have any contact with patients and visitors.

Phoebe also made the decision to close its employee gyms, Phoebe Healthworks in Albany and Americus.  “While employee wellness remains a priority, it isn’t wise for our employees to be in close contact in shared workout facilities.  We will encourage them to find safer ways to exercise for now,” Steiner said.

Older individuals, those with chronic conditions and those with compromised immune systems are at greater risk of serious complications from COVID-19.  Phoebe urges all southwest Georgians to make sure their loved ones who fall into high-risk categories are following proper precautions and have the food, medicine and supplies they need without having to make regular trips into the public to get them.

High School Football: Quick Week 12 Wrap-Up

By Walter L. Johnson II

The regular season has ended. The playoffs are just around the corner.

Instead of doing the usual scoreboard post, here’s a quick wrap-up of games involving multiple teams within the Southwest Georgia Network coverage area for Week 12. The following five games to be mentioned below either had region championships on the line or winner-take-all situations where the winners advanced to the playoffs while the losers season came to a close.

So, without further ado, here’s a summary of the following games:

Lee County clinches Region 1-6A championship: The Trojans from Leesburg beat Coffee 35-17 to clinch their third straight Region 1-6A title at Trojan Field. Lee County finished the regular season undefeated in Region 1-6A play at 4-0 while also finishing at 9-1 overall.

Bainbridge clinches playoff berth: The defending GHSA Class 5A state champion Bainbridge Bearcats will have a chance at winning back-to-back state championships after blowing out Thomas County Central 42-7. The Bearcats clinched the #3 seed in Region 1-5A with the convincing win over the Yellow Jackets. Bainbridge finished the regular season at 7-3 overall, and 2-2 in region play.

Westover misses playoffs again: For the fifth straight season, the Westover Patriots from Albany will sit out the GHSA state playoffs, losing to Hardaway 7-3 at Hugh Mills Stadium on Friday. Westover finished the 2019 season at 6-4 overall, and 4-4 in GHSA Region 1-4A with the loss. The Patriots’ last playoff appearance came in 2014, when they finished that campaign at 6-5 overall, losing to Mary Persons in a 14-0 shutout in the first round.

Mitchell County stuns Pelham for 1-1A title: The Mitchell County Eagles will head into the Class 1A public school playoffs with tremendous momentum after pulling off the upset over the previously undefeated Pelham Hornets 36-28. The Eagles clinched the Region 1-1A title with the stunning win over the Hornets. Both teams go into postseason play at 9-1 overall.

Deerfield-Windsor falls to Valwood: The Deerfield-Windsor Knights saw their opportunity to win one last GISA region title fall by the wayside on Friday night, falling to Valwood 10-7 at Webb Stadium in Albany. Valwood clinched the Region 3-3A crown at 4-0 and 8-2 with the win over DWS, while the Knights finished 5-5 overall, and 2-2 in region play. Deerfield-Windsor now waits to find out whom they’ll face in the first round of the GISA Class 3A playoffs. DWS joins the GHSA in the Class 1A private school ranks in 2020.

Honorable Mention: The Southwest Georgia Academy Warriors clinched the GISA Region 3-2A championship after defeating the Terrell Academy Eagles from 36-28. SGA enters the playoffs at 7-3 overall, and 2-0 in region play.

ICYMI: A Quick Recap on the GHSA Reclassification

By Walter L. Johnson II

The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) announced the reclassification numbers for its member schools earlier this week (Tuesday). Expect tremendous changes for multiple schools within the Southwest Georgia Network coverage area for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years.

Here’s a quick recap on which schools are going where heading into 2020:

The Lee County Trojans will stay in Class 6A but will lose Coffee to Class 5A, while Northside (Columbus) moves up two spots from 4A to 6A. That means there could be two Northside’s in Region 1-6A next season, as the Columbus-based school could join their counterparts in Warner Robins, as well as Houston County, Lee County, and Valdosta.

The real shake-up starts within the Dougherty County School System, with the Westover Patriots moving up from Class 4A to Class 5A, while the Monroe Golden Tornadoes will move up from 3A to 4A. The Patriots could find themselves in a region that will likely include Coffee, Harris County, Veterans, and Warner Robins.

As for Monroe and Dougherty, both the Tornadoes and Trojans could end up in a new-look Region 1-4A that will likely include Bainbridge, Cairo, and Thomas County Central, as well as Columbus, Hardaway, and Shaw in the Columbus area. Dougherty gains Monroe as a region rival while losing Westover.

The now four-time Region 1-3A football champion Crisp County Cougars lose their other three region foes, as Cook and Worth County move down to Class 2A, while longtime archrival Americus-Sumter moves down from Class 3A. Both teams will probably play in a region that includes Columbus area schools Carver, Jordan, and Spencer.

After many years in Class 3A, the Worth County Rams will make the move down to Class 2A for 2020. The Rams could join Berrien, Cook, Early County, Fitzgerald, and Thomasville in a potentially loaded Region 1-2A, where many of those aforementioned teams have made deep postseason runs in the past.

Longtime Class 2A powerhouse Brooks County moves down to the Class 1A public school subdivision. The Trojans from Quitman, Ga. could either land in Region 1 with Mitchell County and Pelham or in Region 2 with Clinch County, Irwin County, and Turner County, among other schools.

Finally, the Deerfield-Windsor Knights from Albany will make history, as they’ll become the first Southwest Georgia school to join the Class 1A private school subdivision. DWS will join the GHSA in 2020 after many years in the GISA.
